Bernard Lagat breaks American indoor 5,000 record: 13:11.50; Galen Rupp 4th in 13:14.21Published by
In a close race in Boston Saturday, Bernard Lagat squeezed ahead of two Ethiopians — Dejan Gebremeskel and Bekana Daba — to win a much anticipated showdown in the 5,000 meters at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. In doing so, the 2009 World Championships silver medalist broke the American record by seven seconds. Lagat broke the record of Portlander Galen Rupp, who was also in the race and ran four seconds under his U.S. record and was fourth. Lagat finished in 13:11.50. Rupp ran 13:14.21. Rupp’s indoor record, set in 2009, was 13:18.12. I’ll hope to have more on this soon.
