Chris Solinsky does it again at Zurich Weltklasse; Galen Rupp nudges a little bit closerPublished by
“It,” of course is sub-13 minutes. That is the benchmark this summer for the top American men in the 5,000 meters. And Chris Solinsky became the first U.S. man to do it three times in one year on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland. Solinsky fought gamely for the win, too, before finishing third in 12:56.45.
Further back, Galen Rupp shaved three seconds off of his PR and moved ahead of former training partner Adam Goucher on the U.S. 5,000 meters list by running 13:07.35. Up front, Kenenisa Bekele’s younger brother, Tariku, was the winner in 12:55.03. Ethiopian Imane Merga edged Solinsky for second, with 12:56.34. Britain’s Mo Farah continued a brilliant month of running by breaking the national record in the 5,000 and becoming history’s 79th man to break 13 minutes. He ran 12:57.94.
