NCAA Championships Decathlon Day 1: Eaton taking care of businessPublished by
Another day, another record for Ashton Eaton of Oregon. With backing from the Hayward Field crowd, Eaton finished Day 1 of the men’s decathlon with a collegiate record 46.28 in the decathlon 400 meters. Eaton spoke of the support he received, “I noticed them on the backstretch and the homestretch. I can’t run that fast by myself.” The time also scored him 994 points and brought his first day total to an even 4500 points. Eaton’s day got off to a fast start by clocking a wind legal 10.37 in the 100 meters. Always a strength, Eaton followed his 100 meters with good first attempt in the long jump of 25-11. His second attempt a long foul that Eaton thought was well over the 26 foot mark. An average performance in the shot put and a sub par 6-7.5 in the high jump were Eaton’s biggest disappointments of Day 1. ”Obviously there were disappointments like my high jump and shot (put). But it’s a multi, I just try to get it back in other events.” As good a day as Eaton had, there is still competition lurking. Texas A&M Trinity Otto, who was not even on the Track and Field News form chart, had a strong first day and is currently sitting in second position. Any points he can score, will be a very valuable as the Aggies and Gators battle for the team title. With a solid second day from Eaton, a third NCAA title and Trey Hardee’s collegiate record of 8465 is definitely within reach. Day 1 Results
